How Every Child Learns: Moving Beyond Learning Style Myths Towards What the Evidence Actually Shows

If you have ever heard a teacher, a well-meaning relative, or perhaps a parenting book describe your child as a 'visual learner' or a 'kinaesthetic learner', you are in very good company. The idea that individuals have a dominant learning style — and that education works best when it is tailored to match that style — has been one of the most enduring beliefs in popular thinking about education.

It is also, according to a substantial and growing body of research, largely unsupported by evidence.

This is not a comfortable thing to say. The learning styles framework is intuitive, it feels respectful of individual difference, and it has been built into teacher training programmes, school policies, and parenting guides for the better part of forty years. But intuitive and accurate are not the same thing, and the consequences of acting on a myth — however well-intentioned — are worth examining carefully.

Where the Idea Came From

The most widely referenced version of learning styles theory, known as VAK (Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic), emerged in the 1970s and gained significant traction through the 1990s and 2000s. The core claim is straightforward: people process and retain information most effectively through a preferred sensory channel, and teaching that aligns with this preference will produce better outcomes.

It is a compelling proposition. Teachers who adopted it reported that it helped them think more carefully about presenting information in multiple ways. Parents found it useful as a framework for understanding why their child might struggle in certain environments. The labels — visual, auditory, kinaesthetic — gave people a vocabulary for difference.

The difficulty is that when researchers set out to test the underlying claim — that matching teaching to a child's stated learning style actually improves learning — the evidence consistently failed to materialise. A landmark review published in the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest examined hundreds of studies and concluded that the 'meshing hypothesis' (the idea that matching instruction to style improves outcomes) had not been adequately supported by controlled research.

Subsequent studies have reached similar conclusions. Children do have preferences about how information is presented. But having a preference is not the same as learning more effectively through that channel. A child who says they prefer visual information does not necessarily retain or understand it better than verbal explanation — they simply find it more comfortable, which is a rather different thing.

What the Evidence Actually Tells Us

If learning styles do not explain why some children thrive and others struggle, what does?

The honest answer is that it is considerably more complex — and considerably more interesting. Research in cognitive science and developmental psychology points to several factors that have robust evidence behind them.

Prior knowledge matters enormously. A child's ability to learn new information is strongly influenced by what they already know. New concepts attach more readily to existing frameworks. This is why building strong foundational knowledge across subjects is not simply about covering the curriculum — it is about giving children the cognitive scaffolding they need for future learning.

Retrieval practice is more effective than re-reading. One of the most consistently replicated findings in educational psychology is that actively recalling information — through low-stakes testing, quizzing, or simply trying to remember something without looking — strengthens memory far more effectively than passively reviewing material. This has practical implications for how children revise and how parents can support learning at home.

Spacing and interleaving improve retention. Learning distributed across several shorter sessions tends to produce better long-term retention than the same amount of time concentrated in a single sitting. Similarly, mixing different types of problems or topics within a study session — counterintuitive as it feels — tends to produce stronger understanding than practising one thing exclusively before moving to the next.

Emotional and social context shapes learning. Children learn better when they feel safe, respected, and connected to the people around them. Anxiety, social exclusion, and low self-confidence are not merely pastoral concerns — they are cognitive ones, with direct effects on working memory and the capacity to engage with new material.

The Danger of Labels

Beyond the question of evidence, there is a more fundamental concern about the learning styles framework: the risk of what might be called premature categorisation.

When a child is identified as, say, a kinaesthetic learner, there is a subtle but real risk that this label begins to define both the child's expectations of themselves and the expectations of the adults around them. A child told they learn best through physical activity may conclude that abstract reasoning or close reading are simply not for them — not because this is true, but because the label has quietly suggested it.

Children are not fixed. Their brains are developing rapidly, their interests shift, and their capacity to engage with different types of material changes significantly across the primary years. A framework that encourages adults to identify and cater to a single dominant mode of learning risks constraining that development rather than supporting it.

How Marton Primary Approaches Diverse Learners

At Marton Primary, our approach is guided by the principle that every child benefits from varied, well-structured teaching — not because different children need different types of input, but because all children learn more effectively when material is presented through multiple means, when they have opportunities to practise retrieval, and when their learning is scaffolded carefully to build on what they already know.

This means that our teachers do not plan lessons around assumed learning styles. Instead, they plan with awareness of the cognitive science that actually supports learning: clear explanation, guided practice, regular low-stakes assessment, and careful attention to the knowledge and skills pupils need before they can access new material.

We also pay close attention to the individual child — not in terms of a fixed category, but in terms of their current understanding, their confidence, and the specific barriers they may be encountering. A child who struggles with reading comprehension, for example, may need support with vocabulary, with background knowledge, or with working memory — each of which requires a different response.

A Framework for Parents

For parents seeking to understand and support their child's learning, the most useful question is not 'What type of learner is my child?' but rather 'Where specifically is my child finding things difficult, and what might lie behind that?'

If your child struggles to retain information, spaced practice and retrieval activities may help more than reviewing notes. If they find new topics difficult to engage with, building background knowledge through books, documentaries, or conversation before formal study begins can make a significant difference. If anxiety or low confidence seems to be affecting their ability to concentrate, addressing the emotional context may matter more than any academic strategy.
