There is a phrase that has quietly entered the vocabulary of educators across the UK: the attention economy. It refers to the commercial reality that platforms, apps, and media outlets are not simply providing information — they are competing, sometimes aggressively, for the most finite resource any of us possesses: our attention. For adults, navigating this landscape is already demanding. For primary school children, whose cognitive architecture is still actively developing, the challenge is considerably greater.

At Marton Primary, we see the effects of information saturation not as a discipline problem or a parenting failure, but as a structural challenge that requires thoughtful, evidence-based responses from both home and school. The children in our care are among the first generation to grow up fully immersed in this environment, and the strategies we use to support them must reflect that reality.

What Happens to a Child's Brain Under Information Pressure

Children's brains are not simply smaller adult brains. The prefrontal cortex — the region responsible for sustained attention, impulse control, and the ability to filter irrelevant stimuli — continues developing well into a person's mid-twenties. This means that primary-age children are neurologically less equipped to resist distraction than the adults around them, and yet they are routinely exposed to content environments specifically designed to prevent disengagement.

Research from University College London and the Anna Freud Centre has highlighted that excessive exposure to rapidly shifting digital stimuli can compress a child's tolerance for slower, more demanding cognitive tasks — precisely the kind of tasks that underpin academic progress. Reading a chapter book, working through a multi-step maths problem, or drafting a piece of extended writing all require what psychologists call "effortful attention." When children's baseline experience of information is one of constant novelty and instant gratification, these slower tasks can feel genuinely uncomfortable rather than merely boring.

It is important to note, however, that this is not a counsel of despair. The brain's plasticity — its remarkable capacity to adapt — means that the habits children develop now can meaningfully shape their attentional capabilities for life.

Recognising the Signs at Home and in the Classroom

Information overload rarely announces itself clearly. Instead, it tends to manifest as behaviours that might be misread as laziness, defiance, or lack of ability. At home, parents may notice a child who seems incapable of settling to a task without repeatedly checking a screen, or who becomes disproportionately frustrated when asked to engage with something that does not provide immediate feedback.

In the classroom, teachers may observe shortened working memory — a child who can follow one instruction but loses track of a sequence — or a reluctance to engage with open-ended tasks that lack a defined, quick endpoint. Neither set of behaviours reflects a child's intelligence or character. They reflect an environment that has, over time, recalibrated their expectations of cognitive effort.

The first step for both parents and teachers is to resist the impulse to pathologise these patterns. Labelling a child as "unable to concentrate" can become a self-fulfilling narrative. Instead, we are better served by asking: what conditions does this child need in order to sustain focus, and how do we build those conditions gradually?

Practical Strategies for Parents at Home

One of the most effective things parents can do is establish what researchers sometimes call "attention anchors" — predictable, low-stimulation periods in the day that train the brain to tolerate quiet engagement. This does not mean banning screens; it means creating intentional contrast. A twenty-minute period after school where a child reads, draws, or plays with construction materials before any screen time begins can, over weeks, meaningfully extend their capacity for sustained focus.

Environment matters enormously. A child attempting homework at a kitchen table with a television on in the background, a phone nearby, and siblings moving around is working against significant cognitive headwinds. Wherever possible, a designated homework space — even a corner of a room — that is associated with focused work helps the brain shift into an appropriate mode more readily.

Talking openly with children about how information environments work is also surprisingly powerful. Children as young as seven can understand, in age-appropriate terms, that apps are designed to keep them watching. Framing this not as a moral failing but as a design feature — something happening to them rather than a reflection of their willpower — tends to increase engagement rather than defensiveness.

What Schools Can Do: The Marton Primary Approach

At Marton Primary, we have given considerable thought to how our classroom environments and teaching approaches can build attentional resilience alongside academic content. Several principles guide our practice.

We prioritise extended, uninterrupted learning blocks where children are supported to stay with a task rather than moving rapidly between activities. This is not about making lessons rigid; it is about modelling what sustained cognitive engagement looks and feels like, and providing scaffolding so that children experience the satisfaction of working through difficulty rather than abandoning it.

We also teach information literacy explicitly — not simply as a digital safety exercise, but as a genuine intellectual skill. Children learn to question sources, identify purpose, and distinguish between information that informs and content that is designed primarily to provoke a reaction. These are skills that serve them far beyond any particular subject.

Finally, we work closely with families to ensure that the approaches used at school are reinforced at home. Our parent workshops and communications are designed to offer practical, non-prescriptive guidance rather than lists of prohibitions. We understand that family life is complex, and our aim is always to equip parents with knowledge and confidence rather than additional anxiety.

A Question of Balance, Not Abstinence

It would be easy to conclude from all of this that the solution is simply less technology. But that conclusion would be both impractical and, ultimately, unhelpful. The digital world is the world our children will inhabit as adults, and the goal is not to shield them from it indefinitely, but to ensure they develop the internal resources to navigate it with agency and discernment.

The children leaving Marton Primary each summer do not need to be anti-technology. They need to be the kind of thinkers who can choose when to engage, what to trust, and when to set something down and think deeply without interruption. Those capacities — cultivated carefully, over years — are among the most valuable gifts we can offer them.
