Reading

We strongly believe that reading and writing, underpinned by speaking and listening skills, are the key to successful learning. Generous time is given to the teaching of English both as a separate subject and across other curriculum areas. All children participate in a daily Literacy lesson where key skills are developed and improved through a combination of shared, guided and independent work.

Our aim is to encourage our children to foster a real enjoyment of reading. We ensure that the children are exposed to a wide range of quality texts. Each class has their own specific authors which they look at in detail. The children are read to daily by their class teacher.

At Marton we use a range of different schemes so that our children experience a breadth of different texts. Some of the schemes used to support the teaching of reading include Oxford Reading Tree Phonics, Phonics Bug from Pearson and Rigby Star.
