Literacy

We strongly believe that reading and writing, underpinned by speaking and listening skills, are the key to successful learning. Generous time is given to the teaching of English both as a separate subject and across other curriculum areas. All children participate in a daily Literacy lesson where key skills are developed and improved through a combination of shared, guided and independent work.

Phonics and Spelling

We aim for all our children to develop fluent word reading skills and establish a good foundation in spelling. Our early spellers follow the Letters and Sounds programme. Children in the Foundation Stage learn actions to help reinforce the new sounds they are learning. All children have a daily phonics/spelling session matched to their individual needs as well as being taught spelling strategies as part of their Literacy lessons.

Writing

We provide a wide range of opportunities for the children to write for different audiences and purposes. The children are taught how to apply their sentence and grammatical skills across a range of contexts. We have a number of themed units of work across school to enhance the children’s writing.

Speaking and Listening

We plan for the children to develop their speaking and listening skills across the curriculum. We teach our children to speak competently and creatively for different purposes and audiences. We provide opportunities for the children to discuss and present what they are learning.

Reading

Our aim is to encourage our children to foster a real enjoyment of reading. We ensure that the children are exposed to a wide range of quality texts. Each class has their own specific authors which they look at in detail. The children are read to daily by their class teacher.

At Marton we use a range of different schemes so that our children experience a breadth of different texts. Some of the schemes used to support the teaching of reading include Oxford Reading Tree Phonics, Phonics Bug from Pearson and Rigby Star.
